Duffy: Summer in DeKalb is full of fun activities
Category: Community News,
The Summer means different things to each of us. School is out (unless you are in summer school) and it’s a time for lots of fun throughout the area.
With the warmer weather comes new opportunities to swim at the nearest pool, golf at the local courses, play and watch baseball and softball at the area fields, listen to live music at the band shell, explore the DeKalb Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday through September, enjoy outdoor movies, and the list goes on.
DeKalb offers a summer full of great opportunities without leaving town. The fireworks at Hopkins Park are a great family tradition that has us all celebrating Independence Day together. You might prefer biking or running and there are trails and events to enjoy doing that, too. With festivals like Kishwaukee Fest and Corn Fest, you have a wide variety of options to enjoy live music, parades, games, food and drinks.
Summer camps are also in full swing with sports camps, STEM camps, faith camps and children’s camps at the DeKalb Park District and Kishwaukee Family YMCA that will provide great memories for the kids and tired children for the parents. These camps are great to keep your children active and learning over the summer.
Wherever your interests lie, I’m sure there are plenty of activities to allow you to enjoy your DeKalb summer. Here are a few ideas that are happening next month in the area.
• July 18 – The July Chamber After Hours offers a chance to learn more about some of our member businesses while meeting up with others to learn about them, too. This event will take place at Friedrichs Eye from 5 to 7 p.m. and will also serve as an open house for those interested in learning more about the program.
• July 25 – The Family Fun Fest will be held at Hopkins Park with a variety of activities that will be fun for the entire family including a touch- a-truck, games, giveaways and food prior to the concert by the municipal band. The Family Fun Fest is from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m.
• July 28 – The Kishwaukee Fest Parade is part of a week full of events. Check out www.KishwaukeeFest.com to find out more about them. The parade has been a great family-friendly event that runs through downtown DeKalb. Each year the parade offers a variety of new and returning participants including many entertainment groups.
These events and many more can be found on the DeKalb Chamber website at www.dekalb.org.
